Saïd Ayachi Denounces France’s Support for Moroccan Autonomy Plan as a Violation of International Law, Accuses Paris of Colluding with Morocco to Undermine Algerian Diplomacy

Algiers, Algeria | July 29th, 2024 — In a recent statement in Algiers, Saïd Ayachi, the President of the National Committee of Algerian Solidarity with the Sahrawi People (CNASPS), has sharply criticized France’s endorsement of Morocco’s autonomy plan for Western Sahara, denouncing it as a blatant violation of international law and indicative of France’s alignment with Moroccan interests at the expense of Sahrawi self-determination.

Ayachi argues that France’s backing of Morocco’s autonomy plan represents a continuation of its colonial-era mindset, a pattern he believes has persisted through various French administrations. He points to historical grievances, noting that during the presidency of Valéry Giscard d’Estaing (1974-1981), France provided military assistance to Morocco in its conflict with Sahrawi groups. Furthermore, Ayachi underscores France’s 2013 veto at the UN Security Council, which blocked the extension of the MINURSO mandate to include human rights monitoring in Western Sahara.

“The masks have fallen,” Ayachi proclaims, condemning France’s overt stance as a direct contravention of established international norms. He emphasizes that Western Sahara remains listed by the UN as a non-self-governing territory, with a referendum on self-determination still pending. According to Ayachi, France’s support for Morocco’s autonomy plan not only exacerbates the conflict but also jeopardizes regional stability, potentially leading to increased unrest.

Ayachi further accuses France and Morocco of conspiring against Algerian interests. He contends that France’s position forms part of a broader strategy to undermine Algerian diplomacy, particularly its initiatives at the UN Security Council on issues such as Gaza. This, he argues, reflects a longstanding endeavor by Morocco and its allies to destabilize Algeria, a situation exacerbated by the rise of extreme right-wing politics in France. Ayachi links these contemporary political maneuvers to historical grievances associated with the OAS (Organisation Armée Secrète) and other figures nostalgic for the colonial era in Algeria.

In addition, Ayachi delivers a scathing critique of Morocco, denouncing its regime as fundamentally untrustworthy due to its history of betrayal. He recounts instances of Moroccan duplicity, including the purported provision of sensitive information on FLN leaders to the French during the Algerian War of Independence and the sharing of critical intelligence with Israel during the 1965 Arab League summit in Casablanca.
