ALGIERS- Salah Goudjil, Speaker of the Council of the Nation, emphasized Algeria’s recognition of the importance of its cultural diversity in bolstering national unity. This sentiment was expressed through a speech delivered by Ali Talbi, Vice-Speaker of the Council of the Nation, at a parliamentary conference held alongside the 6th World Forum on Intercultural Dialogue in Baku, Azerbaijan, from May 1st to 3rd.
Goudjil highlighted the global context of cultural significance amidst challenges such as barbarism, extremism, and polarization. He stressed Algeria’s awareness of its rich cultural diversity, comprising various traditions and dialects that contribute to the nation’s identity. This diversity, he noted, is a valuable asset for social cohesion and economic growth.
Under President Abdelmadjid Tebboune’s leadership, Algeria is committed to preserving its cultural diversity, as enshrined in the 2020 Constitution. Goudjil emphasized that while colonial powers historically exploited cultural differences to sow discord, Algeria sees diversity as a unifying force. He praised Algeria’s historical resilience against colonialism and its successful efforts in combating terrorism and extremism through unity.
Algeria has implemented strategies to protect and promote its cultural heritage, including legislation safeguarding cultural assets and the establishment of the National Fund for Cultural Heritage. Goudjil emphasized that repression of cultural dialogue leads to extremism, emphasizing Algeria’s rejection of extremism and its promotion of inclusivity and peace under President Tebboune’s leadership.
Algeria actively contributes to international dialogue for peace, exemplified by its support for the International Day of Living Together in Peace on May 16. Goudjil commended the Baku process for integrating cultural dimensions into development and peace agendas. He condemned ongoing challenges such as Zionist occupation and crimes against Palestinians and efforts to undermine the Arab and Islamic identity of El Quds.
Goudjil concluded by asserting that colonialism poses the greatest threat to cultural dialogue and international cooperation. He advocated for the eradication of colonialism in Palestine and Western Sahara, enabling peoples to exercise self-determination and preserve their cultures in dignity.
