ALGIERS- Saudi Arabia has filed a complaint with the United Nations against the United Arab Emirates. This complaint pertains to the UAE’s declaration of the Al-Yasat islands as a protected maritime zone.

In the note addressed to the United Nations, Riyadh affirmed its total rejection of the declaration contained in the UAE’s decree concerning the Al-Yasat islands, emphasizing that it is contrary to international law.

Riyadh also asserted that it does not recognize any measures taken by the Emirati government, nor any practices in the maritime zone off the coast of Saudi Arabia, including the regional sea of the Kingdom and the area of joint sovereignty between the two countries, as well as the Mekasseb and Al-Fani islands.

International media reports agree that this complaint heralds a cold war between the two Gulf states, especially since it is the first time such a complaint has been filed, although the dispute over Al-Yasat is very old.

The dispute between Riyadh and Abu Dhabi dates back to the UAE’s declaration of the Al-Yasat islands as an Emirati protected maritime zone, an area that Saudi Arabia considers to have joint sovereignty between the two countries.

On its part, the official news agency of the United Arab Emirates stated that the Al-Yasat zone was created by a princely decree in 2005, on the instructions of the then-president of the UAE, Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan.

In 2019, Abu Dhabi issued a princely decree declaring Al-Yasat as an Emirati protected maritime zone.

Several questions arise regarding the timing of the complaint filed against the UAE, although the heart of the matter dates back to 2019.

The Al-Yasat zone is home to coral reefs, marine seagrass beds, and significant sandy beaches.
