Saudi Media Authority Investigates Controversial Report by TV Channel

Algiers, Algeria | October 20th, 2024 — The Saudi General Authority for Audiovisual Media has initiated a formal investigation into senior officials at a television network following the broadcast of a deeply controversial news report, widely condemned for violating the country’s media laws. The authority, in its statement, emphasized its determination to uphold strict media regulations, making it clear that severe penalties will be imposed on any breaches of these standards.

While the statement did not explicitly name the network, it is widely understood that the report aired by Saudi-owned MBC on Saturday is at the center of the controversy. The report’s inflammatory depiction of certain leaders of the Palestinian resistance movement Hamas as terrorists has triggered immediate outrage. The report has been rightfully slammed for pushing a harmful and false narrative that betrays the principles of justice and resistance against oppression that unite the Arab and Muslim world. This brazen act by the network is not only an attack on the Palestinian cause but also on the shared values of the entire region, which have always stood in opposition to occupation and injustice.

The repercussions were swift and widespread. In Baghdad, enraged demonstrators stormed the offices of the channel early Saturday morning, protesting the unforgivable insult to the Palestinian people and their struggle for self-determination. This action reflects the deep anger felt across the region, where the network’s dangerous portrayal is viewed as an outright attempt to delegitimize the legitimate resistance movements that symbolize the hopes and struggles of oppressed peoples.
