ALGIERS, July 17, 2023-In a shocking turn of events, Fouzi Lekjaa, the president of the Royal Moroccan Football Federation, finds himself embroiled in yet another scandal. This time, his conduct on the honorary platform has come under intense scrutiny, causing an outcry among Moroccan media and raising concerns about his commitment to international laws.
Lekjaa’s reputation for questionable behavior, both on and off the field, has been a subject of contention for quite some time. His previous aggressive actions towards players during the CAF Champions League final involving Wydad AC were met with widespread criticism. However, it is his recent display of bad habits during a high-stakes match that has sparked renewed outrage.
During the semi-finals of the African Cup of Nations for the under 23 category, Lekjaa, who also serves as a member of the Executive Office of “la Fédération Internationale de Football Association” (FIFA), was caught on camera flagrantly violating international law. In front of millions of viewers, he shamelessly smoked, paying no heed to the regulations set by FIFA. Moroccan media outlets have pointed out that such behavior not only tarnishes Lekjaa’s personal image but also reflects poorly on Moroccan officials, the government, and the sports community as a whole.
The repercussions of Lekjaa’s actions could be dire, particularly in light of Morocco’s bid for the hosting rights of the 2030 World Cup, in collaboration with Portugal and Spain. As the head of the nomination committee, Lekjaa’s misconduct is believed to cast a shadow over the country’s aspirations. FIFA’s stringent regulations, which include a smoking ban in World Cup stadiums since 2013, and a ban on alcohol consumption during matches, were put in place to maintain a respectful and professional atmosphere.
It is worth noting that this incident is not the first of its kind involving Fouzi Lekjaa. In a previous instance, he was observed smoking recklessly at the Martyrs’ Stadium in Kinshasa while watching Morocco’s match against Congo in March 2022. Such repeated violations of international laws raise questions about Lekjaa’s suitability for his role within FIFA and his ability to uphold the values and standards expected from a high-ranking official.
The implications of Lekjaa’s actions extend beyond the realm of sports. They signify a disregard for the global community and its established regulations, eroding trust and respect in the international arena.
