New York, September 20, 2023 – In a compelling address to the 78th session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) in New York, Algeria’s President Abdelmadjid Tebboune underscored his country’s unwavering dedication to advancing sustainable development goals (SDGs) and upholding human rights. The President’s impassioned speech illuminated the significant strides made by Algeria in these critical domains and shed light on the nation’s commitment to just causes and oppressed peoples worldwide.

Algeria’s Embrace of Sustainable Development Goals

President Tebboune commenced his address by emphasizing Algeria’s resolute commitment to the principles of the United Nations and its adoption of a national sustainable development plan that aligns with the broader strategies and programs of the government. This holistic approach, President Tebboune noted, has propelled Algeria to make substantial progress in achieving SDGs, particularly in the realms of education, healthcare, infrastructure development, and access to clean water and electricity.

Reflecting on the global landscape, President Tebboune remarked, “More than eight years after the adoption of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and the Addis Ababa Action Plan, several developing countries still face challenges that require greater international solidarity for a better world and an efficient and equitable economic model to attain sustainable development goals.”

Promotion of Human Rights: A Cornerstone of Algerian Policy

President Tebboune also shed light on Algeria’s unwavering commitment to human rights, highlighting its active participation in international human rights treaties and its continuous cooperation with various bodies dedicated to upholding human rights and universal periodic review (UPR) mechanisms. In November 2022, Algeria submitted its fourth national report under the UPR, reinforcing its dedication to fostering a culture of human rights.

The President emphasized, “Algeria firmly believes that respect for and promotion of human rights form the bedrock of any credible political system and is committed to strengthening them through all possible means.” He added that this conviction is rooted in the profound attachment of the Algerian people to the principles of human rights.

The 2020 constitutional amendment in Algeria stands as a testament to this commitment, with its provisions enshrining the “equality of rights and duties between citizens” and striving to eliminate obstacles hindering the effective participation of all citizens. President Tebboune underscored the importance of promoting women’s rights, gender equality, and women’s participation in all aspects of society, including politics, economics, and security.

Algerian Youth: Catalysts for Sustainable Development

Recognizing the immense potential of Algeria’s youth, President Tebboune highlighted the government’s initiatives to provide institutional support and resources to harness their capabilities. These programs aim to engage young people as a driving force in advancing sustainable development across political, economic, and cultural domains.

Moreover, the President emphasized Algeria’s commitment to involving youth in the resolution and prevention of conflicts, aligning with the principles of Algeria’s foreign policy. A practical national plan has been developed in line with the Security Council resolution to empower women and enhance their role in promoting peace and security.

President Tebboune’s address at the UN General Assembly not only reaffirmed Algeria’s dedication to achieving SDGs and promoting human rights but also emphasized the country’s determination to harness the potential of its youth as a catalyst for sustainable development and progress on the global stage. Algeria’s unwavering commitment to just causes and oppressed peoples resonated strongly, offering a beacon of hope and inspiration for a brighter, more equitable future.
