ALGIERS-– Algerian President Abdelmadjid Tebboune announced the appointment of Mohamed Nadir Larbaoui as the new Prime Minister on Saturday, November 11, 2023. Larbaoui succeeds Aïmène Benabderrahmane, who held the position since June 2021.

Mohamed Nadir Larbaoui, a seasoned diplomat with a distinguished career, previously served as the Director of the Presidency’s Cabinet since March 18, 2023, until his recent designation as Prime Minister.

Born in Tebessa, the son of a former Mudjahid in the National Liberation Army, Larbaoui’s journey encompasses not only diplomacy but also sports. A former international player in the Algerian handball team, he brings a diverse set of experiences to his new role.

Starting as a lawyer, his journey includes significant roles, such as Director of the Arab Maghreb Department, Director of International Economic Relations at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the National Community Abroad. Following the fall of Colonel Muammar Gaddafi, Larbaoui chaired the National Commission responsible for repatriating foreigners who had left Libya and entered Algeria.

Larbaoui has also held the positions of Algeria’s Ambassador to Pakistan and Egypt and Permanent Representative to the Arab League in October 2019, and led the Algerian negotiating team for finalizing the Convention on the Delimitation of Maritime Borders with Tunisia, signed in Algiers in July 2011.

Larbaoui transitioned from his role as Ambassador to Cairo to become an advisor to the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ramtane Lamamra. His success in garnering support for Algeria’s candidacy as a non-permanent member of the United Nations Security Council reflects his diplomatic finesse.

Prior to his role as the Director of the Presidency’s Cabinet, Larbaoui served as the Permanent Representative to the United Nations, showcasing his extensive experience on the international stage.

Throughout his illustrious career, Mohamed Nadir Larbaoui earned respect for his diplomatic acumen and commitment. His ability to captivate audiences, coupled with a profound understanding of various subjects, allowed him to effortlessly articulate Algeria’s positions in international forums. Notably, his competence and charisma played a pivotal role during the Arab Summit in Algiers, facilitating efficient and impactful discussions.

On the international stage, Larbaoui demonstrated adeptness in dealing with counterparts, including Morocco’s UN Representative Omar Hilale, consistently asserting Algeria’s position while navigating challenging and untenable situations.

In his role as Director of the Presidency’s Cabinet, Larbaoui showcased humanism, charisma, competence, and efficiency, earning recognition from colleagues and officials within Algeria’s highest public institution. Leading critical missions with finesse, he directed a team well-equipped to fulfill the objectives at hand.
