Second Edition of the International Dates Exhibition: 180 Exhibitors to Showcase Algeria’s Date Industry at Algiers Exhibition Center

Algiers, Algeria | November 18th, 2024 — The second edition of the International Dates Exhibition will take place from November 21 to 23 at the Safex Exhibition Center in Algiers, with more than 180 exhibitors, industry stakeholders, and international participants showcasing the richness of Algeria’s date sector. The event is organized by the National Chamber of Agriculture under the patronage of the Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development, and it aims to further strengthen Algeria’s position as a global leader in date production.

A Platform for Innovation and International Collaboration

The exhibition, themed “Our Dates… Authenticity and Sustainable Economy,” will bring together key actors in the date industry, including producers, storage operators, packagers, exporters, processors, and local artisans. It will also feature participants from countries such as Tunisia, Libya, and Turkey, enhancing the event’s international appeal.

According to Mohamed Yazid Hambli, President of the National Chamber of Agriculture, the exhibition will serve as a unique space for networking and collaboration among local and international stakeholders. He emphasized that the primary goal is to “foster competition to improve the product, promote its export, and ultimately drive the sustainable development of the date sector.”

The exhibition will provide an opportunity for exhibitors to present a wide array of dates and their derivatives, offering consumers a chance to explore the diverse varieties that Algeria produces. Additionally, it will serve as a platform to raise awareness about the importance of preserving this crucial crop while encouraging dialogue between domestic and international stakeholders, boosting Algeria’s presence in global markets.

Highlighting Research and Technological Advances

In addition to commercial opportunities, the event will feature presentations of research and studies conducted by experts in the date industry. These contributions will highlight the latest innovations and technological advancements aimed at improving the cultivation, processing, and export of dates.

Hambli stressed the sector’s significant economic value, noting that dates are a major source of income for many countries with arid climates. In Algeria, dates remain the leading agricultural product in the southern regions, where more than 19 million date palms are cultivated. From 2021 to 2023, date production in the country has soared, reaching more than 11.5 million quintals.

A Vision for Growth and Global Leadership

Algeria is already recognized as a global leader in date production, particularly in terms of the quality of its products. However, Hambli emphasized that continued progress requires investment in the processing industry, mechanization, and the adoption of modern marketing and packaging techniques.

The government’s roadmap to revitalize the sector includes an ambitious plan to plant one million new date palms, further cementing Algeria’s status as a powerhouse in the global date market. Achieving this goal, Hambli explained, will require the active involvement of all sector stakeholders, from farmers and processors to researchers and policymakers.
