Algiers, Algeria | July 17th, 2024 — In a significant move aimed at revitalizing cross-border rail connectivity, the Algerian National Railway Company (SNTF) has initiated its second trial journey between Algeria and Tunisia. This initiative, part of a strategic decision by both nations’ authorities, seeks to restore regular train services linking the neighboring countries.
According to an official statement released by SNTF on Tuesday, the recent trial journey began on Monday, July 15, 2024, with a passenger train departing from Souk Ahras in Algeria to Ghardimaou in Tunisia. The SNTF delegation, led by Director General Adj Bouaouni, received a warm welcome at Ghardimaou station from officials of the Tunisian National Railway Company (SNCFT) and the local Delegate of Ghardimaou.
The return trip to Souk Ahras took place on the same day, accompanied by a delegation from SNCFT, led by their CEO Toufik Boufayed. In Souk Ahras, the Tunisian delegation was greeted by Abdelkrim Zinai, the local governor, underscoring the diplomatic and operational importance of this cross-border initiative.
Critical to the successful launch of this rail link is the ongoing assessment of infrastructure readiness along the 357 km route from Annaba to Tunis, covering railway tracks, stations, and passenger facilities. SNTF has undertaken extensive rehabilitation efforts, supported by technical upgrades and safety enhancements to meet international rail standards.
Technical discussions held on Tuesday, July 16, between SNTF and SNCFT teams concluded with the signing of a comprehensive commercial agreement. This agreement outlines operational protocols for both commercial and technical aspects of train operations, marking a significant step towards formalizing regular passenger and freight services.
“This second trial journey aims to thoroughly assess infrastructure readiness, paving the way for the imminent launch of official services,” stated SNTF. Ongoing works, closely supervised by Algeria’s Ministry of Transport and coordinated with relevant governmental bodies, underscore the commitment to expediting the finalization of technical and administrative procedures.
Highlighting broader strategic goals, SNTF emphasized that this initiative aligns with mutual aspirations of Algerian and Tunisian authorities to deepen socio-economic ties through enhanced transport connectivity. The resumption of rail services is expected to facilitate smoother movement of passengers and goods, promoting economic integration and cultural exchange between the two nations.
Reflecting on the inaugural trial journey conducted earlier in June this year, SNTF reiterated its commitment to establishing a robust and reliable rail network benefiting both countries. With preparations advancing swiftly, stakeholders anticipate the formal launch of regular train services in the near future, heralding a new era of cross-border cooperation and development.
