Algiers, Algeria | September 25th, 2024 — Ahmed Attaf, Algeria’s Minister of Foreign Affairs and National Community Abroad, chaired the meeting of the A3+ group’s foreign ministers in New York. This meeting was held at the initiative of Algeria, as indicated by a communiqué from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs on Wednesday.
The A3+ group comprises Algeria, Sierra Leone, and Mozambique—three African countries holding non-permanent seats on the United Nations Security Council—along with Guyana, which shares historical ties of solidarity with the African continent. Notably, Somalia participated in this meeting in anticipation of its upcoming term on the Security Council, set to begin on January 1, 2025, succeeding Mozambique.
The communiqué emphasized that “this meeting, convened at Algeria’s initiative, which coordinates the group, reaffirmed the commitment to ongoing regular consultations and close coordination on various issues on the Security Council’s agenda. It also examined ways to preserve and enhance the effectiveness and coherence of this consultation mechanism.”
Additionally, this gathering aligns with the preparations for the upcoming high-level conference on peace and security in Africa, scheduled for early December in Oran. The statement underscored that “the establishment of the A3 group represents one of the significant achievements of the ‘Oran Process’ initiated over a decade ago,” highlighting Algeria’s proactive role in fostering unity and collaboration among African nations on global security matters.
This meeting reflects the ongoing efforts by African countries to strengthen their voices within the UN framework, advocating for a more cohesive approach to addressing regional and international security challenges.
