Algiers, Algeria | February 15th, 2025 — In a significant diplomatic achievement, Algeria’s ambassador to Addis Ababa and Permanent Representative to the African Union (AU), Selma Malika Haddadi, has been elected Vice President of the AU Commission. The election, held on Saturday, marks a pivotal moment for Algeria’s growing influence within the continental organization.
Haddadi succeeds Rwanda’s Monique Nsanzabaganwa, whose term has concluded. In her campaign statement, Haddadi vowed to inject renewed energy and a more efficient administrative approach into the AU Commission, aligning with the organization’s ambitious vision of ‘The Africa We Want.’ She laid out three strategic objectives for her tenure: enhancing the administrative and financial management of the AU Commission, reinforcing trust and synergy between the Commission and AU member states, and improving coordination within AU institutions while strengthening partnerships with international stakeholders.
As Vice President of the AU Commission, Haddadi will play a crucial role in assisting the Chairperson in managing the organization’s administrative and financial affairs. Additionally, she will be responsible for assuming the duties of the Chairperson in their absence, ensuring continuity and stability in the Commission’s leadership.
Haddadi’s election underscores Algeria’s diplomatic commitment to reinforcing its role within African institutions and advancing the continent’s collective interests. Her tenure is expected to prioritize institutional efficiency, financial transparency, and deeper collaboration among AU member states to address Africa’s pressing challenges.
Meanwhile, Djiboutian diplomat Mahmoud Ali Youssouf has been elected as the new Chairperson of the AU Commission, setting the stage for a new era of leadership within the organization. Together, Haddadi and Youssouf will be tasked with navigating the Commission through complex political, economic, and security issues while championing Africa’s strategic interests on the global stage.
The election of Haddadi to this high-profile position signals a reaffirmation of Algeria’s dedication to Pan-African cooperation and governance, positioning the North African nation as a pivotal player in shaping the future of the AU.
