Algeria Strengthens Its Multilateral Role in Global Governance and African Affairs
Algiers, Algeria | February 19th, 2025 — Algeria reaffirmed its unwavering commitment to multilateralism and global governance reform as Selma Mansouri, Secretary of State for African Affairs, held a series of high-level bilateral meetings on the sidelines of a UN Security Council debate on multilateralism and governance reform. These diplomatic engagements underscored Algeria’s strategic vision for strengthening cooperation, particularly within African and international institutions.
Mansouri’s diplomatic efforts included discussions with Somali Foreign Minister Ahmed Maalim Faqi, Ugandan Foreign Minister Jeje Odongo Abubakher, and Sierra Leone’s Deputy Foreign Minister Francess Piagie Alghali. The talks centered on reinforcing coordination within international forums, notably the African Union (AU) and the United Nations (UN), as Algeria continues to play a pivotal role in shaping regional and global diplomatic frameworks.
Furthermore, Mansouri participated in a crucial meeting with the “A3+” group—comprising Algeria, Somalia, Sierra Leone, and Guyana—focusing on Africa and Latin America’s priorities within the Security Council agenda. The discussions aimed to bolster the group’s collective influence, ensuring that pressing issues, particularly those concerning peace, security, and sustainable development, receive the necessary international attention.
In a significant step towards deepening Algeria-UN relations, Mansouri also held talks with UN Special Adviser on Africa, Cristina Duarte, and UN Assistant Secretary-General for Africa, Martha Ama Akyaa Pobee. These discussions highlighted the prospects for enhanced cooperation in peacekeeping and conflict resolution, reaffirming Algeria’s leadership in fostering stability across the African continent.
