Seminar in France Highlights Sahrawi People’s Rights and Sovereignty Over Natural Resources

Algiers, Algeria | November 05th, 2024 — The Friends of the Sahrawi Republic Association in France is hosting a seminar on November 22 in Claircigny, Le Mans, centered on the Sahrawi people’s rights and their sovereignty over natural resources. Titled “The Rights of Peoples and Sovereignty Over Natural Resources: The Case of Western Sahara,” the event seeks to highlight recent European Court of Justice (ECJ) rulings and the broader implications of ongoing, unexamined support for Morocco’s expansionist ambitions in Western Sahara.
Key speakers will include prominent figures such as Gilles Devers, an international lawyer and advocate for Sahrawi rights, and Abi Bouchraya Bachir, the Polisario Front’s representative to Switzerland, the United Nations, and other Geneva-based organizations. Speaking to Algeria’s official news agency, Bachir underscored the seminar’s relevance, aligning it with two pivotal developments. First, he referenced the ECJ’s October 4 rulings, which annulled EU-Morocco agreements that unlawfully included Western Sahara—a territory legally distinct from Morocco according to the court—without the consent of the Sahrawi people, a flagrant violation of prior ECJ judgments.
The second development, Bachir noted, is French President Emmanuel Macron’s recent recognition of Morocco’s claimed “sovereignty” over Western Sahara and the concurrent economic partnership between France and Morocco to exploit Western Sahara’s resources. The seminar intends to scrutinize these rulings and their extensive political, legal, and economic impacts on Morocco, the EU, and particularly on France, as it signals a willingness to overlook EU judicial decisions in favor of supporting Morocco’s control over Western Sahara.
Bachir further stressed the urgency of informing the French public, especially consumers, about France’s plan to bypass EU law in backing Morocco’s occupation of Western Sahara. Beyond the legal aspects, the seminar will issue a caution to France regarding the consequences of its full-fledged support for Morocco’s expansionism, warning of potential destabilization across North Africa and the Mediterranean if France continues down this path.
