Algiers, Algeria | June 14th, 2024 — During a plenary session at the People’s National Assembly (APN) on Thursday, the Minister of Transport, Mohamed El Habib Zahana, provided an update on the progress of the Algiers metro extension project. The minister reported that the construction work on two new metro lines is nearing completion.
Near Completion of Two Major Metro Lines
Minister Zahana announced that the extension of the Algiers metro, which includes two new lines, is now 99% complete.
– El Harrach Centre to Algiers Airport Line: This line stretches 9.5 kilometers and includes 9 stations. It is a critical addition that will enhance connectivity between the city center and the airport.
– Ain Naadja to Baraki Line: This line spans 4.4 kilometers and includes 4 stations. It aims to improve transit options in one of Algiers’ densely populated districts.
Both lines have reached a remarkable 99% completion rate, indicating that they will soon be operational and ready to serve the public.
Urgent Plans for Urban Mobility
In response to concerns about the accessibility of new urban areas, especially in the western parts of the capital, Minister Zahana outlined several urgent measures to improve public transportation:
– New Railway Lines: Two new railway lines, Zeralda-Reghaia and Blida-Reghaia, are set to open in July. These lines are expected to significantly enhance transportation links across key urban areas.
– Comprehensive Urban Transport Plan: The ministry has developed an emergency plan to address urban mobility challenges. This includes 130 new terrestrial transport lines operated by private entities and 54 lines managed by the Algiers Urban and Suburban Transport Establishment (ETUSA), utilizing 205 buses.
– New Bus Terminal: There are plans to allocate land in the administrative district of Sidi Abdallah for the construction of a new type-C bus terminal, which will further improve the urban transport infrastructure.
Railway System Upgrades
In Algiers, the National Railway Transport Company (SNTF) has initiated a program for 2023 and 2024 aimed at restoring and rehabilitating damaged railway segments. This initiative, with a budget of 28 billion DA, seeks to shorten travel times and increase the frequency of train services, thereby enhancing the overall efficiency and reliability of the city’s rail network.
Looking Forward
The imminent completion of the new metro lines represents a significant milestone in the development of Algiers’ public transport system. These projects are part of a broader strategy to modernize and expand urban transportation, facilitating better connectivity, reducing congestion, and improving the quality of life for residents.
