ALGIERS- Sky News Arabia has faced scrutiny due to its dubious journalistic practices, marked by sensationalism and a lack of professionalism. A mere fortnight following the airing of a segment by their correspondent, Nahed Zerouati, which explored the Great Mosque of Algiers, the network proceeded to broadcast another feature, this time centering on the Hassan II Mosque located in Casablanca, Morocco.

Aziz Fathi, the correspondent for Sky News in Morocco, faced minimal challenges in crafting his report on the Casablanca mosque, as the script for the segment was readily accessible. Essentially, he replicated the material provided by the channel’s Algerian correspondent, Nahed Zerouati, with little exertion required.

The Emirati channel had an opportunity to provide a fresh and distinctive perspective on the Hassan II Mosque, introducing novel viewpoints and innovative ideas. Unfortunately, rather than seizing this chance, they chose a recycled approach lacking in professionalism, seemingly aimed at diminishing the significance of the Great Mosque of Algiers. It’s important to note that the Great Mosque of Algiers holds considerable prominence as the third-largest mosque worldwide, ranking only behind the two holy mosques in Mecca and Medina.

Sky News Arabia’s endeavor to please Moroccans at the detriment of Algerians, by framing the reports as a flawed comparison between two mosques, each possessing its own distinct characteristics, historical significance, and construction contexts, has drawn widespread condemnation. Despite criticism, the channel persisted in its approach to crafting the reports. However, it would have been more fitting for them to spotlight the unique attributes of the Great Mosque of Algiers, underscoring its qualifications for holding the esteemed position as the third-largest mosque in the Islamic world.
