Algiers, Algeria | July 17th, 2024 — The National Railway Transport Company (SNTF) of Algeria has taken a new step towards enhancing cross-border transportation by signing a commercial agreement with the Tunisian National Railways Company. This agreement marks the initiation of passenger train services between the two neighboring countries.
According to a statement by SNTF, a delegation of executives from the Tunisian National Railways Company, led by CEO Tawfik Boufaid, recently visited Algeria as part of the second trial run of the passenger train service between Souk Ahras (Algeria) and Ghardimaou (Tunisia).
During the visit, technical meetings were held between the executives of the Tunisian company and their Algerian counterparts, headed by SNTF’s General Manager, Adj Bouaouni. These discussions culminated in the signing of a comprehensive commercial agreement that outlines all commercial and technical aspects of the train operations.
Infrastructure and Preparations
The statement also highlighted that the renovation and enhancement of the railway lines between Annaba and the Algeria-Tunisia border, along with upgrades to train stations and passenger reception areas, are progressing at a rapid pace. These efforts are being closely monitored and supported by the Ministry of Transport in coordination with various relevant authorities and official bodies.
Objective and Future Plans
The ongoing preparatory work aims to complete the trial phase and finalize all technical and administrative procedures necessary for the official launch of the passenger train services as soon as possible. This initiative is expected to significantly improve cross-border transportation, enhancing connectivity and fostering closer ties between Algeria and Tunisia.
