Algiers, Algeria | February 3rd, 2025 — In a decisive move to revitalize Algeria’s film industry, renowned cinema producer Sofiane Guentari has announced the establishment of a National Cinema Management Body, an initiative directly aligned with the directives and vision of President Abdelmadjid Tebboune. This strategic step is aimed at fostering cohesion within the cinematic sector and ensuring a structured, progressive approach to filmmaking in Algeria.
Guentari hailed President Tebboune’s recent pronouncements and policy decisions, emphasizing their role in propelling Algerian cinema onto a trajectory of growth and international recognition. He underscored the ongoing efforts to unite professionals across the industry, ranging from grassroots-level workers to prominent producers across all 58 wilayas, under a single authoritative entity.
The envisioned body will serve as a cornerstone for the advancement of Algeria’s cinematic landscape. Guentari outlined a comprehensive roadmap, highlighting that, upon its official launch, the organization will begin by systematically registering and training all industry stakeholders—including technicians, actors, directors, and producers. In parallel, the body will work to safeguard their social rights, ensuring that Algerian cinema professionals benefit from the same protections and support mechanisms available in other vital sectors of the national economy.
“This initiative is a necessary complement to the pioneering development movement that Algeria is witnessing across multiple domains. Just as other sectors are experiencing significant progress, cinema must also adhere to the rational and ambitious vision set forth by President Tebboune,” Guentari stated.
Drawing from Algeria’s rich cinematic legacy, Guentari highlighted the immense potential embedded in the country’s revolutionary history. “Algerian cinema was born from the flames of the liberation struggle, an inexhaustible reservoir of inspiration that my late father, Professor Mohamed Guentari, devoted his life to documenting. Through his extensive travels across Algeria, he meticulously recorded historical accounts in books, audio archives, and video footage. Many of these untapped resources, chronicling the narratives of the mujahideen—some of whom have passed—remain invaluable material for future cinematic productions,” he explained.
Guentari firmly believes that harnessing these historical records will pave the way for groundbreaking films that reinforce and expand upon Algeria’s distinguished film heritage.
