Algiers, Algeria | December 31st, 2024 — Rachid Hachichi, CEO of Sonatrach, joined a high-level delegation led by the Minister of Energy, Mines, and Renewable Energies, Mohamed Arkab, in an inspection visit to key infrastructure projects in Oran. The delegation included the Minister of Water Resources, Taha Derbal, and the CEOs of Sonelgaz, Cosider, and the National Hydraulic Studies and Works Group, alongside senior officials from the energy and water sectors.

Central to this visit was an on-site review of the White Cape seawater desalination plant, a flagship initiative within the supplementary emergency plan initiated by President Abdelmadjid Tebboune. Designed to address water scarcity and enhance resource sustainability, the project is part of a larger program encompassing five major desalination plants, each with a daily production capacity of 300,000 cubic meters.

Progress Milestones and Presidential Vision

The delegation received a detailed briefing on the progress of the desalination plant, which has surpassed 90% completion. The facility operates around the clock to ensure adherence to the ambitious delivery timeline. This critical project, inaugurated by President Tebboune on June 23, 2022, aims to secure potable water supplies for Oran and neighboring provinces.

To accelerate progress, Sonatrach introduced an aerial logistics strategy in September 2023, utilizing the Antonov 124 cargo aircraft for rapid transportation of essential equipment. This innovative approach has mitigated logistical challenges associated with maritime shipping, completing 288 air cargo flights to date.

The Algerian Energy Company, in collaboration with Sonatrach subsidiaries such as the National Civil Engineering and Construction Company and the National Company for Major Petroleum Works, oversees this transformative initiative.

Comprehensive Project Overview

The delegation also inspected the downstream infrastructure associated with the desalination plant, including a 300,000 m³/day pumping station and a 50,000 m³ capacity water reservoir. Minister Arkab officially inaugurated the Botellès power generation station and a new facility for manufacturing electric meters in Oran, reflecting Algeria’s strides toward energy self-sufficiency and technological advancement.

At the concluding stage of the visit, the delegation toured Sonatrach’s separation and liquefaction facilities in Oran. Minister Arkab was briefed on key advancements in refining, petrochemicals, and liquefied natural gas (LNG) projects, emphasizing Algeria’s role as a global energy player.
