ALGIERS- In his address on Sunday at the Libyan summit on energy and the economy in Tripoli, Rachid Hachichi, the CEO of Sonatrach, emphasized the pivotal role of natural gas in the ongoing energy transformation.
“The importance of natural gas is now embedded in the roadmaps and plans of several countries and companies in the oil and gas sector, all striving for carbon neutrality,” stated Hachichi, underscoring that “this recognition solidifies gas as a strategic pillar in the ‘zero-emission’ ambitions, contributing decisively to global energy transformation.”
Hachichi also highlighted the positive contribution of gas to the anticipated energy transformation, considering it the “preferred” fuel to meet growing energy needs. Additionally, he emphasized its role in reducing pollution and limiting greenhouse gas emissions.
According to Hachichi, a distinctive feature of gas is its “clean flaring” in comparison to oil and coal, giving it confirmed relevance and a crucial place, especially in urban environments.
Gas to Cover 24% of Energy Needs by 2040
Hachichi projected that natural gas, owing to its availability, affordable price, and cleaner nature compared to other fossil fuels, is expected to cover around 24% of global demand by 2040 and 36% by 2050. This surge would surpass coal, making gas the second-largest energy source after oil.
Touching on sustainable development in Africa, Hachichi emphasized the need to intensify efforts for a “comprehensive and equitable” energy transition, aiming to ensure “fair” access to energy resources across the continent. He also highlighted Africa’s vast potential in renewable energy and abundant solar sources, positioning it to become a global producer, significantly propelling economic development and contributing to sustainable development goals.

In pursuit of common goals related to global energy demand and economic development, especially in African countries, Hachichi stressed the importance of collaboration, expertise sharing, and fostering partnerships. He assured that Sonatrach is committed to leveraging its 60 years of experience to support cooperation with partners, addressing challenges creatively and responsibly.
