Sonatrach CEO Participates in Baker Hughes Annual Meeting in Italy and Holds High-Level Talks with Tecnimont and Baker Hughes

Algiers, Algeria | February 2nd, 2025 — Sonatrach’s President and CEO, Rachid Hachichi, is actively participating in the annual meeting of the U.S. energy giant Baker Hughes, currently taking place in Florence, Italy. Leading a high-ranking delegation, Hachichi is joined by the CEO of Sonelgaz, reinforcing Algeria’s commitment to strengthening its global energy partnerships.

On the sidelines of the meeting, Rachid Hachichi held a working session with Alessandro Bernini, CEO of the Italian engineering company Tecnimont, to review progress on the construction of a petrochemical complex dedicated to the production of linear alkylbenzene (LAB). This essential raw material, widely used in the manufacturing of detergents and industrial cleaning agents, represents a cornerstone in Algeria’s petrochemical expansion strategy.

The $1.05 billion project, awarded to Tecnimont, is expected to produce 100,000 tons of LAB annually. With completion slated for the end of 2027, the facility will not only meet domestic market demand but also position Algeria as a key exporter of this high-value chemical component.

The Sonatrach delegation also received a detailed presentation on the ongoing construction of the liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) extraction complex in Rhourde El Baguel. The project has reached a 73% completion rate and is scheduled for commissioning in the first half of 2026. Once operational, the plant will generate 1,000 tons of LPG per day, along with 300 tons of condensates, significantly bolstering Algeria’s hydrocarbon output.

Enhancing Gas Production: Critical Meeting on the Hassi R’Mel Reservoir Expansion

In addition to these discussions, Hachichi and his delegation convened with representatives from Tecnimont and Baker Hughes to assess the technical and operational progress of the Hassi R’Mel Reservoir Enhancement Project – Phase Three, Step Two. This vital initiative, awarded to the two companies under a contract signed with Sonatrach on May 23, 2024, aims to maximize gas recovery and optimize field performance in Algeria’s largest gas reservoir.

Both parties underscored the necessity of adhering to contractual deadlines, given the project’s strategic importance in reinforcing Sonatrach’s gas production capacity. The discussions emphasized the deployment of cutting-edge extraction technologies, process efficiency, and the integration of sustainability-focused solutions.
