ALGIERS- The enhancement of the country’s gas production is a top priority for the national hydrocarbon company Sonatrach in the coming years. To achieve this goal, the group is focusing on expanding exploration areas and developing existing fields, such as the Zelfana field in the Ghardaïa region.

During a visit to the region, the Minister of Energy and Mines revealed Sonatrach’s program for the development of this field and the expansion of exploration areas. “Sonatrach’s program for this year, aimed at developing the Ghardaïa field, includes drilling over 23 new wells, including 12 development wells, 4 resource renewal wells, and 7 new exploration wells,” he stated.

Mohamed Arkab emphasized that the country is committed to improving its gas production to meet the growing demand in the local market and increase exports. “The goal of this plan is to increase the country’s gas production to meet both the growth in local demand and fulfill the country’s commitments in the international market,” he explained.

Supporting his statements, the minister highlighted the numerous projects that came into operation last year, contributing to the increase in production in the coming years. “Efforts to develop the country’s gas production were marked by the commissioning of several projects in the country last year, strengthening production,” he said.

In addition to reinforcing research and exploration activities, field development is also central to the national hydrocarbon company’s policy for the coming years. In the last two years, significant field development programs have been launched by Sonatrach, notably in Hassi Messaoud, Hassi R’mel, Touat, and Illizi, one of the country’s largest gas fields. To succeed in this strategic approach, Sonatrach has allocated a financial envelope of nearly $40 billion for exploration, production, and development in its five-year plan extending until 2028.

Sonatrach aims for a 6% growth in production by 2028, supported by numerous projects implemented in the previous year and others expected for the current year, particularly in the Hassi R’mel region, where a deposit of nearly 300 billion cubic meters was discovered in 2022.
