ALGIERS- In a significant move signaling its ambitions to establish a foothold in the Algerian market, Exxon Mobil, the major American oil and gas company, is engaged in high-level discussions with officials from the state-owned energy group Sonatrach. The talks, centered on potential partnerships in the upstream oil and gas sectors, are poised to culminate in a partnership agreement in the coming days, as per an official statement released by the Ministry of Energy.
Following a pivotal meeting in mid-November 2023 in Oran, where Sonatrach’s CEO Rachid Hachichi and Jonathan Wilson, Vice President of Global Ventures at Exxon Mobil, convened, the Minister of Energy and Mines, Mohamed Arkab, hosted John Ardell, Vice President in charge of research exploration, for further discussions on opportunities within the Algerian energy market.
According to the ministry’s statement, the discussions encompassed “the possibility of investment in the upstream oil and gas sector in Algeria,” now a focal point of interest for the American conglomerate. Both entities are actively identifying cooperative projects within the hydrocarbon domain in Algeria. The country’s strategic energy policy places significant emphasis on boosting hydrocarbon production, presenting lucrative investment prospects for international stakeholders.
Key factors such as eased investment conditions, improved business climate, abundant natural resources, and proximity to markets have become vital attractions for foreign investors. Exxon Mobil, in expressing its keen interest in partnership development with Sonatrach, signifies its strategic return to the Mediterranean arena.
“The meeting explored avenues to develop partnerships based on complementarity and shared interests,” highlighted the official statement. Algeria has recently become a hotspot for American oil companies looking to assert their presence in the Mediterranean region and strengthen ties with the European market.
Following in the footsteps of Oxy Petroleum, present in the Algerian market for several years, and Chevron, set to enter the market after signing a protocol of agreement with Sonatrach in March 2023, Exxon Mobil is poised to make its mark in the Algerian energy sector.
