Collaboration focuses on exploration in Ahnet and Gourara basins, emphasizing technological innovation and sustainable practices

Algiers, Algeria | April 17th, 2025 — In a move to bolster Algeria’s energy sector, Sonatrach’s CEO, Rachid Hachichi, convened with ExxonMobil executives in Houston to discuss collaborative opportunities in hydrocarbon exploration and mining development. The meeting, attended by senior officials from both companies, underscored a mutual commitment to advancing Algeria’s resource potential through strategic partnership.

Central to the discussions was the implementation of a memorandum of understanding (MoU) signed on May 23, 2024, in Algiers. This agreement aims to explore and develop hydrocarbon resources in Algeria’s Ahnet and Gourara basins, focusing on operational excellence, technological innovation, environmental stewardship, and sustainable practices.

To facilitate this collaboration, a joint committee has been established to oversee negotiations and assess progress toward a shared hydrocarbon development contract. During their visit, the Algerian delegation toured ExxonMobil’s operational centers, including the remote operations control center and the methane emissions monitoring facility, gaining insights into cutting-edge technologies employed to minimize carbon footprints.
