Sonatrach Launches Pilot Project to Plant 10 Million Shrubs for Carbon Capture

Algiers, Algeria | July 30th, 2024 — In a significant move towards environmental sustainability, Sonatrach, Algeria’s national oil company, has announced a pioneering pilot project aimed at planting 10 million shrubs over an area ranging between 10,000 and 13,000 hectares. This initiative, in partnership with the General Directorate of Forests (DGF), is designed to reduce carbon emissions and bolster Algeria’s climate strategy, as disclosed by Abdelkrim Ouamer, Central Director of Health, Safety, and Environment (HSE) at Sonatrach.

In an interview with National Radio, Mr. Ouamer detailed that this pilot project is a crucial component of Sonatrach’s broader climate strategy, which envisions the plantation of over 420 million trees across 560,000 hectares, with an estimated budget of one billion dollars. The pilot aims to lay the groundwork for this extensive reforestation effort.

The project’s feasibility study will be conducted by the DGF, which will determine suitable tree species and select appropriate planting sites within the national forest domain. Additionally, a segment of the pilot will be incorporated into the Green Barrier reforestation program, further aligning the initiative with national environmental goals.

Mr. Ouamer emphasized that Sonatrach’s commitment to combating climate change aligns with Algeria’s international climate agreements. Beyond environmental benefits, the project is expected to generate employment opportunities, contributing to the socio-economic development of the region.

The initiative also highlights Sonatrach’s dedication to mitigating the environmental impacts of its energy operations and leveraging carbon credits to support such green projects. As part of its climate governance, Sonatrach is implementing management practices aimed at minimizing its activities’ climate and environmental impacts. Notably, efforts are underway to reduce gas flaring to 1% by 2030 relative to the total volume of hydrocarbon production.

This ambitious project underscores Sonatrach’s role in advancing Algeria’s climate objectives and promoting sustainable environmental practices, reaffirming its commitment to addressing the global challenge of climate change while supporting national economic and environmental goals.
