Algiers, Algeria | September 26th, 2024 — On Thursday, Sonatrach, Algeria’s national oil company, commenced a solidarity convoy from its logistics base in Oued Smar, Algiers, aimed at providing essential support to victims of the recent devastating floods in the Béchar and Naâma provinces. The catastrophic floods have led to substantial material losses, affecting homes and infrastructure and necessitating immediate humanitarian intervention.
The official launch of this humanitarian initiative was marked by the presence of Sonatrach’s Secretary-General, Abdelkader Zerrouki, alongside Djarroud Khellaf, Secretary-General of the company’s national union. Their attendance underscored the corporate commitment to social responsibility and community engagement during times of crisis.
According to a statement from Sonatrach, the convoy consists of nine articulated trucks carrying vital equipment intended to aid in the recovery and rehabilitation of the affected areas. The supplies include electric generators, cleaning and sanitation equipment, lighting fixtures, and educational furniture—items essential for restoring normalcy in the impacted communities.
The trucks will be dispatched to the Béchar and Naâma provinces, with careful coordination alongside local authorities to ensure that aid reaches those most in need. This strategic approach aims to enhance recovery efforts from the destructive impacts of the floods while reinforcing the importance of community collaboration in addressing the aftermath of natural disasters.
