ALGIERS- In a demonstration of commitment to regional development, the CEO of Sonatrach, Mr. Rachid Hachichi, accompanied by senior executives of the company, conducted an inspection visit to various significant projects across the province of Tébessa.

The visit commenced with a trip to the Djebel Onk oil production zone, located approximately 90 km south of Tébessa. There, a presentation on a project involving the construction of an 11 km crude oil collection network was provided to Mr. Rachid Hachichi. Additionally, the completion of a crude oil storage facility with a capacity of 700 cubic meters, entrusted to ENGTP with a 24-month deadline, was outlined.

The second stop on the itinerary was the integrated phosphate project, focused on the Bilad Al-Hadba mine in the Djebel Onk region. Supervised by the Algerian-Chinese Fertilizer Company, this project, currently in the engineering studies phase, was presented in detail. Djebel Onk boasts one of Algeria’s and Africa’s largest phosphate reserves, estimated at around 2.8 billion tons of phosphate ore with a phosphorus oxide content of 24%.

The delegation then visited the Gas Pipeline Directorate, Enrico Mattei, responsible for pipeline transportation activities. A detailed presentation on production activities at Djebel Onk, including operational highlights from 2023 and the progress of development projects in the region, was provided.

Expressing appreciation for the efforts of the workforce, Mr. Rachid Hachichi encouraged continued dedication to regional development initiatives.

Furthermore, the Gas Pipeline Directorate’s role in managing and controlling a transport network, including three pipelines with a diameter of 48 inches and a transport capacity exceeding 32.7 billion cubic meters per year, was elucidated. This network extends from the National Gas Distribution Center in Hassi R’Mel to the Oued Safsaf compression station in Biskra, onward to Italy via Tunisia.

In a significant collaboration, an agreement was signed between Sonatrach’s Central Research and Development Directorate and the University of Cheikh Larbi Tebessi. This agreement aims to launch a joint project focused on studying and developing innovative processes for phosphate extraction and enrichment, crucial for high-quality fertilizer production. Mr. Rachid Hachichi emphasized the pivotal role of the university in mobilizing qualified human resources and engaging experts to optimize performance.

The CEO was honored by the university’s rector in recognition of Sonatrach’s commitment to Algerian academia and scientific research. Additionally, he received a copy of a historical thesis presented by the martyr Cheikh Larbi Tébessi to the professor.

The visit concluded with a detailed presentation by the Regional Directorate of Naftal, highlighting efforts to meet the petroleum product needs of Tébessa’s residents. Plans for expanding fuel and liquefied petroleum gas storage capacity, as well as the establishment of a medical-social center affiliated with the regional Naftal directorate, were discussed. Mr. Rachid Hachichi emphasized the urgency of accelerating these projects to enhance fuel storage capacity and achieve self-sufficiency in butane gas, propane, and liquefied petroleum gas, benefiting Tébessa and neighboring regions in Tunisia.
