Algiers, Algeria | September 19th, 2024 — In conjunction with the World Energy Conference “Gastech” being held from September 17-20 in Houston, Sonatrach’s CEO, Rachid Hachichi, met with a delegation from John Cockerill, a global leader in renewable energy technologies, with a particular focus on green hydrogen production through electrolyzers. The meeting, which took place at John Cockerill’s headquarters in Houston, marked a significant step in Sonatrach’s strategic exploration of renewable energy partnerships.
During the meeting, John Cockerill’s team presented their latest innovations in green hydrogen production, transportation, and commercialization, showcasing cutting-edge technologies aimed at revolutionizing the sector. Sonatrach, which is keen to expand its footprint in renewable energy, viewed the meeting as an opportunity to explore future collaboration, particularly in the burgeoning green hydrogen market.
The Sonatrach delegation, led by Hachichi, toured John Cockerill’s electrolyzer manufacturing plant, where equipment for the U.S. green hydrogen market is produced. John Cockerill’s vast expertise spans various sectors, including hydrogen, energy, industry, environment, and infrastructure, positioning them as a key player in the global renewable energy landscape.
At the Gastech conference, Hachichi participated in a panel discussion addressing the need to attract talent and skills to reduce the carbon footprint in the energy sector. He highlighted Sonatrach’s ambitious zero routine gas flaring program, which aims for full implementation by 2030. Renewable energy projects, such as photovoltaic solar plants, were underscored as critical to reducing the company’s electricity consumption and optimizing gas resources.
Hachichi also emphasized Algeria’s strategic advantages in the global energy transition, particularly in green hydrogen production and commercialization. As part of Sonatrach’s new climate strategy, the company is focusing on reducing greenhouse gas emissions, integrating renewable energy sources, and developing carbon capture solutions.
In his remarks, Hachichi reiterated that natural gas remains central to the global energy transition due to its lower environmental impact relative to other fossil fuels. He highlighted its role as a clean energy resource that will play a pivotal part in the transition towards more sustainable energy solutions, complementing Algeria’s efforts in renewable energy development.
The discussions at Gastech and the potential partnership with John Cockerill underline Sonatrach’s growing commitment to positioning itself as a leader in green hydrogen and renewable energy, reinforcing Algeria’s standing in the evolving global energy market.
