Sonatrach Receives First Shipment of Vital Equipment for Seawater Desalination Plants

Algiers, Algeria | September 13th, 2024 — Sonatrach, Algeria’s leading energy company, has announced the receipt of its inaugural shipment of vital equipment for the operation of seawater desalination plants. The delivery, which took place today, marks a significant milestone in Algeria’s ambitious plan to enhance its water security through advanced desalination technology.

In a detailed communiqué, Sonatrach outlined the logistics of this crucial shipment, revealing that a dedicated airbridge consisting of ten flights was established to transport the equipment swiftly. This approach was strategically chosen over maritime transport, which would have entailed several months of delays, ensuring that the equipment arrived within days to meet the tight project deadlines. The airlift is part of the final phase of the national program, scheduled to run from September 13 to 26.

The equipment, sourced from Japan, includes essential components such as pumps that support energy recovery systems. These components are destined for use in the desalination plants located in Ras Jannet, El Tarf, Béjaïa, and Fouka, where construction is already 75% complete. The rapid deployment of these components is crucial for maintaining the momentum of the construction schedule.

This initiative aligns with President Abdelmadjid Tebboune’s strategic vision to bolster Algeria’s water security through a comprehensive program aimed at expanding the nation’s desalination capacity. The national program involves the construction of five major desalination plants across the wilayas of Oran, Tipaza, Boumerdès, Béjaïa, and El Tarf, with a combined production capacity projected at 1.5 million cubic meters per day. This ambitious project is designed to address Algeria’s growing water demands and ensure a sustainable supply of freshwater.
