Algiers, Algeria | June 12th, 2024 — Sonatrach, the state-owned Algerian oil and gas company, has bolstered its digital transformation by signing an agreement with Chinese technology giant Huawei.

At Huawei’s headquarters in Shenzhen, China, Sonatrach’s CEO Rachid Hachichi and Huawei’s counterpart Hua Liang signed a memorandum of understanding. This agreement aims to explore cooperative opportunities in digitalization and information technologies, including cloud computing, data centers, IT networks, telecommunications, and cybersecurity.

This memorandum reflects Sonatrach’s commitment to digital transformation as a crucial lever for optimizing processes, fully exploiting potential, and adapting to contemporary challenges. The strategic partnership between Sonatrach and Huawei, which recently included solutions for renewable energy, particularly in electricity storage, will enhance Sonatrach’s R&D activities and the implementation of digital solutions to address the oil and gas sector’s challenges.

Additionally, the partnership aims to foster an innovation-friendly ecosystem and promote continuous improvement in high-tech and digitalization within the energy sector through specialized training programs.

Huawei’s Solution to Secure Sonatrach’s Pipelines

Huawei has previously collaborated with Sonatrach to develop a high-performance technique for securing the company’s gas and oil pipeline network. At the MWC Barcelona 2024 global technology expo, Sonatrach showcased the achievements of the intelligent pipeline inspection solution developed with Huawei. This solution ensures high security, intelligence, and efficiency of the network through automated pipeline inspection using distributed fiber optic sensing technology.

In this solution, Huawei deployed an optical detection device enabling high-precision automatic inspection and alerting of pipelines, operating 24/7. When external construction occurs around a pipeline, the fiber optic deployed along the network collects vibration information and transmits it to the optical detection device in a valve station equipment room, allowing precise positioning.

Sonatrach, which manages about 43 oil and gas pipelines with 14,000 km of optical cables, traditionally relies on costly and inefficient manual inspections that struggle to monitor pipeline conditions continuously and in real-time.

During the project’s exhibition in Barcelona, Sonatrach’s Joint Innovation Center Director, Ms. Sana Lallalia, stated that the fiber detection inspection solution addresses the challenges of manual inspection and slow risk identification. She added, “We are pleased with the results of this joint innovation with Huawei and look forward to continuing our cooperation to promote the intelligent transformation of the oil industry.”

By leveraging Huawei’s expertise in ICT and advanced technological solutions, Sonatrach aims to enhance its digital infrastructure, streamline operations, and strengthen security measures, thereby maintaining its competitive edge in the rapidly evolving energy sector.
