Sonatrach Resumes Operations in Niger: A Strategic Move to Revitalize the Kafra Oil Field

Algiers, Algeria | August 8th, 2024 — Sonatrach, Algeria’s leading oil and gas company, has officially announced the resumption of its operations in Niger’s Kafra oil field. The decision marks a significant step in reinforcing bilateral energy cooperation between Algeria and Niger, and is expected to bolster regional energy development.

The announcement follows a productive two-day working visit to Niger on August 6-7, 2024, led by Mohamed Arkab, Minister of Energy and Mines, and Rachid Hachichi, CEO of Sonatrach. The visit included high-level meetings with key stakeholders from both Sonatrach and Niger’s national oil company, Nigerien Petroleum Company (Sonidep S.A).

During these meetings, it was agreed that Sonatrach’s subsidiary, Sipex, would resume operations at the Kafra oil field. A detailed project schedule was developed collaboratively to ensure timely and efficient progress. According to a statement from Sonatrach, a Joint Monitoring Committee will oversee the project’s advancement on a monthly basis to guarantee effective implementation.

The meetings also identified new areas for cooperation between Sonatrach and Sonidep S.A. These include initiatives in training and skills development, as well as the potential revival of major projects, such as the Trans-Saharan Gas Pipeline (TSGP). This pipeline project, which has significant implications for regional energy distribution, was discussed as a key area for future collaboration.

Sonatrach emphasized that the recent meetings represent a valuable opportunity to strengthen bilateral relations and promote sustainable development within the oil and gas industry. The renewed partnership is expected to advance shared objectives and contribute to the broader regional energy landscape.
