Sonatrach, Ronesans Holding Announce Final Investment Decision for Major Polypropylene Project in Turkey

Algiers, Algeria | September 10th, 2024 — Sonatrach, Algeria’s state-owned hydrocarbon giant, and its Turkish partner Ronesans Holding announced the Final Investment Decision (FID) on Monday for their joint Propane Dehydrogenation and Polypropylene Production (PDHPP) project to be developed in Turkey. The official announcement took place during a high-profile ceremony held at Sonatrach’s headquarters in Algiers, with Sonatrach CEO Rachid Hachichi and Ronesans Holding CEO Erman Ilicak in attendance, according to a statement released by Sonatrach.

The PDHPP project, a large-scale petrochemical complex to be constructed within the Ceyhan industrial zone in Adana, Turkey, will feature a propane dehydrogenation unit (PDH), a polypropylene production unit (PP), and shared utility and storage facilities.

Sonatrach will hold a 34% stake in the project through its international subsidiary, Sonatrach Petroleum Investment Corporation (SPIC BV), while Ronesans Holding will control the remaining 66%. Under the terms of the agreement, Sonatrach will supply the propane feedstock for the facility through a long-term contract, with prices aligned to global market rates.

“This PDHPP project in Turkey aligns with Sonatrach’s strategic objectives of international expansion, diversification, and enhancing the value of hydrocarbons, particularly in the petrochemical sector,” the company emphasized in its statement.

The complex, once completed, is expected to significantly contribute to the economic development of both Algeria and Turkey, while strengthening Sonatrach’s position in the global petrochemical market through the transformation of hydrocarbons into high-value-added products.
