Algiers, Algeria | October 1st, 2024 — Rachid Hachichi, the CEO of Sonatrach, welcomed Niger’s Minister of Petroleum, Sahabi Oumarou, to the company’s headquarters as part of a working visit to Algeria from September 28 to October 2, 2024. This meeting marked a significant step in enhancing cooperation between the two nations in the oil and gas sector.
During their discussions, Hachichi and Oumarou explored opportunities to deepen their collaborative efforts, particularly focusing on the ongoing research and exploration project in the Kafra oil field located in northern Niger, which is making notable progress. The two leaders also emphasized the importance of exchanging expertise across various aspects of the oil value chain, including refining, petrochemicals, and training initiatives.
The meeting served as a platform to evaluate advancements in the strategic project to construct the Trans-Saharan Gas Pipeline, which aims to connect Nigeria to Algeria via Niger. Both parties reaffirmed the critical nature of ongoing coordination among the three involved nations to ensure the implementation and realization of prior agreements. Oumarou highlighted the project’s potential to significantly boost economic and social development in all three countries, expressing Niger’s readiness to resume consultations and organize a trilateral meeting in the upcoming weeks.
As part of the visit, Oumarou and his delegation toured various Sonatrach energy and training facilities, including the Algerian Petroleum Institute and the Exploration and Production Laboratory in Boumerdes. The Nigerien delegation also visited liquefaction and separation units, which included the Arzew refinery and the petrochemical complex in the Arzew industrial zone in Oran.
The visit culminated in the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between Sonatrach and Niger’s National Petroleum Company (SONIDEP), a state-owned enterprise specializing in energy and petroleum products. This MoU enables both companies to discuss cooperation opportunities in oil exploration and exploitation, refining, petrochemicals, and the marketing and distribution of petroleum products.
The signing reflects Sonatrach’s ambition to develop and enhance partnerships with Nigerian companies through collaborative programs, particularly in specialized training. This step underscores the commitment of both Algeria and Niger to elevate their bilateral relations and drive mutual progress in the energy sector, signaling a robust partnership that is poised to yield significant benefits for both nations.
