Algiers, Algeria | July 9th, 2024 — Sonelgaz, Algeria’s state-owned electricity and gas utility, has announced the partial commissioning of the country’s largest power plant in Mostaganem, according to a statement released on Monday. This milestone marks the activation of the first gas turbines, enhancing national production capacity by 450 megawatts in its initial phase.

The hybrid power plant in Mostaganem, operated through Sonelgaz’s subsidiary SPE-Electricity Production, has been progressively coming online since last Thursday, as detailed in the statement reported by APS. The plant’s inauguration aims to strengthen Algeria’s electricity supply network, particularly benefiting the coastal and industrially significant region of Mostaganem, and extending its impact across the country.

“This significant energy infrastructure contributes to the ongoing development program in Mostaganem province, bolstering the national energy supply network and enhancing public service, especially in this coastal and tourist-industrial region, as well as throughout Algeria,” emphasized the public utility group.

The commissioning of this power plant aligns with Sonelgaz’s broader strategy to expand energy production capabilities and support national energy requirements. It joins a series of major energy projects recently initiated by Sonelgaz, aimed at fortifying its production capacity and ensuring robust energy provision for Algerian citizens.

The announcement underscores Algeria’s commitment to advancing its energy infrastructure and meeting growing electricity demands through strategic investments in power generation and distribution across the nation.
