Algiers, Algeria | September 1st, 2024 — In a landmark development supporting Algeria’s energy transition goals, Khalil Hodna, spokesperson for Sonelgaz, has unveiled a new factory dedicated to the production of electric vehicle (EV) charging stations. Operated by the Algerian Electrical and Gas Industries Company (SAIG), a subsidiary of the Sonelgaz Group, this facility represents a significant milestone in Algeria’s commitment to green energy and economic diversification.

Hodna emphasized the strategic significance of this initiative, stating, “The establishment of this factory is a key element of Algeria’s national energy transition strategy. Initially, our focus was on addressing domestic market needs. However, with the local market reaching saturation, we have shifted towards international exports to bolster Algeria’s foreign currency reserves beyond hydrocarbons.”

This initiative marks the first phase of a major contract involving the export of 433 EV charging stations. The stations, available in two capacities—60-kilowatt medium range and 302-kilowatt fast-charging—are designed to meet international standards and will be shipped to Libya and Italy. This move highlights Algeria’s expanding influence in the global green technology sector.

In addition to this initial export, Sonelgaz is negotiating several other contracts aimed at European and Middle Eastern markets. “These new agreements reflect our continuous efforts to enhance our international market presence,” Hodna noted. “We are also focused on increasing the national integration of our manufacturing process, which currently stands at 58 percent, with plans to further elevate this in the near future.”
