ALGIERS- Public group Sonelgaz announced the completion of the final phase of its enterprise restructuring program aimed at addressing future challenges, particularly in the supply of electricity to the growing local market. This restructuring is pivotal in realizing the government’s ambitions for the export of energy sources.

The company reported the successful conclusion of the program initiated in 2022, which aimed to reduce the number of subsidiary companies from 34 to 11. The last phase involved the merger and absorption by Sonelgaz-Production of Electricity of Shariket Kahraba El Djazair (SKE), the merger and absorption by Sonelgaz-Renewable Energies of the Algerian Renewable Energies Company (Shaems), and the merger and absorption by Sonelgaz services of Shariket Amn Wa Himayat El Mounchaat El Kahrabaiya Wa El Ghaziya.

The reorganization is geared towards preparing the group to face new challenges, especially with the emergence of new markets for renewable energies. It also aims to meet the growing demand in the local market, expected to increase by 8.7% annually from 2020 to 2025.

This restructuring reflects the global shift towards sustainable energy, particularly solar power, with Algeria having 27% renewable resources in electricity production. It aligns with the national strategy focusing on solar energy, which presents opportunities and is integral to the country’s hydrogen development plans.

While domestic electricity consumption is currently below the overall production of around 24,000 MW, Algeria’s emphasis on solar energy aligns with its broader strategy for international presence. Recent initiatives include opening exports to Libya and ongoing discussions with Italy for the construction of an electrical interconnection linking Algeria to the European Union.

A recent report by the American Ocean organization highlighted Algeria’s efforts in solar energy production as representing significant investment opportunities, supported by government backing.
