Sonelgaz Strengthens Energy Ties with Egypt, Exploring Strategic Partnerships in the Electricity Sector

Algiers, Algeria | February 10th, 2025 — In a step toward deepening Algerian-Egyptian cooperation in the energy sector, a high-level delegation from the Sonelgaz Group, led by its CEO Mourad Adjal, embarked on an official visit to Cairo from February 8 to 10. The visit, which underscores Algeria’s commitment to fostering regional energy synergies, focused on exploring new avenues of collaboration with key Egyptian electricity companies.

During this mission, Adjal engaged in discussions with Gaber Desouki, Chairman of the Egyptian Electricity Holding Company, and Mona Rezk, Chairwoman of the Egyptian Electricity Transmission Company. The talks revolved around enhancing bilateral cooperation in electricity production, transmission, and distribution, with a particular emphasis on establishing a robust and long-term partnership between both nations’ energy sectors.

As part of its strategic outreach, the Algerian delegation also conducted an extensive visit to Elsewedy Electric, a leading Egyptian industrial conglomerate renowned for its expertise in cable manufacturing and energy infrastructure. Elsewedy Electric, which already operates in Algeria through its cable production facilities, has played a key role in supporting Sonelgaz’s efforts in modernizing and rehabilitating the country’s electricity and gas networks. The meetings between Sonelgaz executives and Elsewedy’s leadership resulted in constructive exchanges aimed at strengthening industrial cooperation, particularly in the production of electrical equipment essential for Algeria’s expanding power transmission network.

A Landmark Agreement to Boost Social and Industrial Ties

Beyond commercial and industrial collaborations, the visit also paved the way for an institutional partnership. A landmark framework agreement was signed between the Social and Cultural Works Fund of Sonelgaz and the General Syndicate of Public Service Workers of Egypt. This accord seeks to enhance the welfare and social benefits of employees within both organizations, reinforcing the human and professional ties that bind the energy sectors of Algeria and Egypt.

The delegation’s itinerary commenced with an important diplomatic engagement with Algeria’s Ambassador to Egypt, Mohamed Sofiane Berrah. The meeting served as an opportunity to align Algeria’s strategic energy objectives with its broader diplomatic and economic ambitions in the region. Ambassador Berrah emphasized the significance of this visit as a catalyst for expanding economic relations between Algiers and Cairo, particularly in light of the increasing demand for energy infrastructure development across North Africa.

Sonelgaz underscored the importance of this mission as a milestone in its regional strategy, reaffirming its commitment to consolidating Algeria’s role as a key player in the African energy sector. The company stressed that the deepened cooperation with Egyptian entities aligns with a shared vision for technological exchange, industrial investment, and sustainable energy development, ensuring a mutually beneficial partnership that contributes to the modernization of power systems in both countries.
