Algiers, Algeria | May 22, 2024 — Aligned with its energy ally Sonatrach, Algeria’s national electricity and gas company, Sonelgaz, is embarking on an expansion beyond its borders to tap into promising markets.
A meeting held recently in Brazzaville, Republic of Congo, brought together Algeria’s Minister of Energy, Mohamed Arkab, and his Congolese counterpart, Emile Ouosso, to discuss avenues for cooperation in various aspects of the electricity sector. The discussions also delved into domains that could strengthen cooperation, investments, exchange of experiences, and development of solutions to common concerns, especially between Sonelgaz and the Congolese electricity company (Snel).
Sonelgaz’s interest in the African energy market stems from the continent’s vast potential, with millions of households still lacking access to electricity. With over 50 years of experience and significant annual turnover, Sonelgaz aims to seize opportunities across Africa, focusing on expertise, training, services, equipment, and energy solutions.
The company’s international expansion strategy is evident in its recent restructuring, including the establishment of a dedicated department for international development. Sonelgaz actively participates in various regional and international energy organizations, facilitating its presence in multiple African countries.
Sonelgaz has already established successful collaborations, such as exporting electricity to Tunisia and exploring prospects with the Libyan Electricity Company (Gecol). Agreements with countries like Mauritania further open doors for cooperation in electrical connection and equipment sales.
Recognized for its expertise and experience in the electrical and gas sectors, Sonelgaz plays a vital role in Algeria’s industrial and economic development. The company’s efforts align with the national agenda to electrify industrial zones, supporting economic growth and ensuring national security.
