ALGIERS- In the aftermath of South Africa’s national football team triumphing over Morocco in the Africa Cup of Nations, the Secretary-General of the ruling African National Congress (ANC) party, Fikile Mbalula, took to his Twitter account to express his jubilation.

The tweet read: “We won against the occupier of Western Sahara.” This bold statement by Mbalula not only celebrated South Africa’s sporting victory but also conveyed a clear political stance on the Western Sahara issue, referring to Morocco as an “occupier” and asserting the independence of the Western Sahara.

South Africa and Algeria Advocate for the Liberation of Peoples: A Unified Call for Justice in Palestine and Western Sahara

In a reaffirmation of their commitment to the principles of justice, self-determination, and human rights, South Africa and Algeria continue to stand united in advocating for the liberation of oppressed peoples, notably the Palestinians and the Sahrawi people of Western Sahara. This shared commitment extends beyond national borders, reflecting a broader African perspective on global issues.

South Africa’s ruling party, the African National Congress (ANC), and Algeria have consistently championed the causes of freedom, justice, and self-determination. The recent Africa Cup of Nations football match between South Africa and Morocco brought forth a symbolic celebration of victory.

Both countries share a history of overcoming colonial legacies and fighting for their own freedom. South Africa’s successful struggle against apartheid and Algeria’s war of independence against French colonial rule have deeply shaped their commitment to supporting the struggles of others facing similar challenges.

In the case of Palestine, both South Africa and Algeria have consistently voiced their support for a just and lasting solution, emphasizing the need for an independent Palestinian state. The plight of the Palestinian people and their right to self-determination resonate strongly with the historical struggles for freedom in both South Africa and Algeria.

Similarly, the Western Sahara conflict, with competing claims over the territory, has drawn the attention and solidarity of South Africa and Algeria. Advocating for the Sahrawi people’s right to determine their own political future, both nations have consistently called for a resolution that respects international law and the principles of self-determination.

The shared commitment to these causes enhances the diplomatic influence of both South Africa and Algeria on the African continent and the global stage. By championing the rights of oppressed peoples, these nations contribute to the discourse on justice, freedom, and human rights.
