Algiers, Algeria | October 9th, 2024 — During the opening of the 9th edition of “Korean Week” in Algiers, South Korean Ambassador You Ki-Jun emphasized that cultural and artistic collaboration between South Korea and Algeria is poised to become a fertile foundation for building stronger economic, political, and social ties between the two nations. The ambassador also hinted at potential joint cultural projects in the future, solidifying this dynamic relationship.
Speaking at a press conference held at the South Korean Embassy on Tuesday to inaugurate the week-long celebration, Ambassador You expressed his enthusiasm for the annual event, which he said reflects South Korea’s ongoing cultural engagement with the Algerian people. “I am delighted to announce the opening of the 9th edition of the Korean Week, which will run until the 21st of this month,” he stated.
This year’s edition of “Korean Week” promises a rich array of cultural activities. Among the highlights are the 17th edition of the Korean-Arab Friendship Caravan, taking place on October 8, the fifth screening of a Korean film as part of the “MIKTA” film festival on October 12, and two notable events scheduled for October 21: the Korean speech contest and the highly anticipated K-pop festival. All these events will be hosted in various locations across Algiers, offering the Algerian public an immersive experience of Korean culture.
Ambassador You Ki-Jun shed light on the significance of the Korean-Arab Friendship Caravan, which has evolved into an annual cultural showcase since its inception in 2008. The ambassador noted that while the event transitioned to an online format from 2020 to 2023 due to the global challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic, it maintained its connection with Arab audiences virtually. “I am particularly pleased to announce that this year marks the return of the Friendship Caravan to an in-person format, right here in Algeria,” the ambassador added.
The ambassador’s remarks underscored the growing importance of cultural diplomacy as a key element in strengthening bilateral relations. He emphasized that South Korea sees culture not merely as a soft power tool but as a bridge to foster deeper economic cooperation and political dialogue. The embassy’s ongoing efforts to promote Korean culture in Algeria, as evidenced by the annual Korean Week, serve as a testament to the commitment of both nations to furthering mutual understanding and collaboration across various sectors.
