South Sudan Peace Efforts Bolstered: Algeria’s Bakhta Selma Mansouri Engages in High-Level African Union Meeting in Juba

Algiers, Algeria | January 18th, 2025 — Algeria’s Secretary of State for African Affairs, Bakhta Selma Mansouri, participated in the proceedings of the African Union (AU) Ad Hoc High-Level Committee on South Sudan (C5) held in Juba, South Sudan. The meeting, convened to assess the progress of the revitalized peace agreement and fortify collaboration with regional and international partners, underscored Algeria’s commitment to fostering stability, sustainable development, and lasting peace in South Sudan.

A communiqué issued by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs on Friday highlighted that the gathering witnessed the participation of high-level representatives, including the Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD), the United Nations Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS), the Reconstituted Joint Monitoring and Evaluation Commission (RJMEC), and ambassadors from African nations accredited to South Sudan.

During the deliberations, C5 members engaged with South Sudan’s First Vice President, Riek Machar, to discuss persistent challenges impeding the full implementation of the peace accord. These discussions emphasized the necessity of enhanced cooperation among stakeholders to overcome obstacles, expedite the peace process, and secure stability and security in the region.

Addressing the assembly, Ms. Mansouri underscored the pivotal importance of robust and comprehensive implementation of the revitalized peace agreement. “The effective execution of this accord is fundamental to achieving national stability and reconciliation in South Sudan,” she declared, reiterating Algeria’s unwavering support for initiatives aimed at securing lasting peace.

She further highlighted the urgent need to activate key provisions of the agreement, asserting that such steps are indispensable for fostering durable peace, creating conducive conditions for sustainable development, and improving the quality of life for the South Sudanese people.

The meeting reaffirmed the C5’s commitment to bolstering the international community’s collaborative efforts to promote peace and development in South Sudan. Algeria’s active engagement reflects its dedication to African unity and its strategic role in advancing continental stability and prosperity.
