Spain: Algeria, second-largest supplier of gas in March

ALGIERS- During the month of March 2023, Algeria was Spain’s second largest supplier, behind the United States, which, once again, became the country’s leading source of gas supply. Nigeria ranks third, followed by Russia.

Thus, last month, Algeria supplied 6,403 gigawatt hours (GWh) of gas, via the Medgaz gas pipeline, and 2,871 GWh of LNG transported by LNG carriers, i.e. a total of 9,274 GWh, equivalent to 24.5% of Spanish needs, according to data from the latest bulletin published by the Spanish energy infrastructure management operator, Enagás.

Spain’s LNG supply from the United States reached 11,012 gigawatt hours in March, more than 29% of total demand. Nigeria supplied Spain with 5920 GWh (15.6%), Russia with 5460 GWh (14.4%).

In February, Algeria was the main supplier of natural gas to Spain, with 24.2% of Spanish needs. In second position, the United States with 22.6% of the total, according to the balance sheet of Corporación de Reservas Estratégicas (Cores). Russia was Spain’s third-largest supplier of natural gas, with 17.2% of the European country needs.
