Algiers, Algeria | May 28, 2024 — In a significant diplomatic move, the Spanish government adopted a decree recognizing the State of Palestine during a council of ministers. The government spokesperson announced this decision, and in a solemn statement, Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez declared that this recognition, coordinated with Ireland and Norway, was “a necessity” to “achieve peace.”

Ireland’s Recognition

Ireland has also officially recognized the State of Palestine. Prime Minister Simon Harris emphasized the importance of this decision to “keep hope alive.” He called on the Zionist entity to “listen to the world and stop the humanitarian catastrophe” in Gaza, underlining the urgency of addressing the ongoing crisis.

Norway’s Recognition

Norway marked a “significant day” in its relations with Palestine by officially recognizing the State of Palestine. Norwegian Foreign Minister Espen Barth Eide highlighted Norway’s long-standing support for a Palestinian state, stating that this official recognition is a significant milestone in the bilateral relationship between the two nations.

Belgium’s Push for European Support

Belgium is working to gather a “broad group” of European countries to recognize the State of Palestine as part of efforts to end the aggression in Gaza. Belgian Prime Minister Alexander De Croo expressed hope that collective European recognition would leverage efforts to halt the violence in occupied Palestine. He condemned the recent Zionist military bombings in a supposed safe area in Rafah that resulted in 45 deaths, calling the incident “completely unacceptable.”

Palestinian Prime Minister’s Response

Palestinian Prime Minister Mohammad Mustafa expressed appreciation for Belgium’s stance on the Palestinian issue. He noted the long-standing supportive relationship between the two countries and expressed gratitude for Belgium’s position on the current events in Gaza and the West Bank.
