ALGIERS- Spanish health authorities have issued a warning about the arrival of a new batch of Moroccan strawberries suspected of being contaminated with Hepatitis A virus.

According to the Spanish news agency “Efe,” this notification marks the second of its kind, launched yesterday following routine border control operations conducted on products entering the European Union, as gathered by the Rapid Alert System for Food and Feed (Rasff).

The agency noted that this batch was en route to Poland, adding that Spanish health authorities have informed their Polish counterparts of the matter.

It emphasized the necessity of seizing the opportunity to demand reciprocal treatment for imported products, which must comply with European standards.

It is worth mentioning that the National Office for Food Safety in Morocco categorically denied that Moroccan strawberries include Hepatitis A, indicating that multiple samples were taken from irrigation water and strawberries at the unit and field levels to assess their quality and identify any potential health risks. The tests for Hepatitis A and Norovirus came back negative, and no contamination was detected in the irrigation water.

Moroccan agricultural products face significant challenges in Spain. Prior to these recurrent health warnings, shipments of agricultural exports have been seized and destroyed by Spanish farmers disgruntled by Moroccan competition.
