Algiers, Algeria | November 24th, 2024 — In a significant development for Algeria’s energy sector, Spanish company “Enagás” has revealed that Algerian natural gas imports have exceeded 37.9% of Spain’s total energy needs between January and October 2024. With an estimated 107.744 gigawatt-hours (GWh) of gas supplied, Algeria has cemented its position as a primary energy partner for Spain, outpacing both Russia and the United States in providing essential gas resources.
Enagás’ latest statistics highlight the continued diversification of Algeria’s natural gas exports to Spain throughout the first ten months of the year. The breakdown reveals that 86.156 GWh of Algerian gas was delivered via the Medgaz pipeline, while 21.588 GWh came in the form of liquefied natural gas (LNG) transported by tanker. This efficient distribution strategy has played a crucial role in ensuring Spain’s energy security.
The most noteworthy increase came in October 2024, when Algeria’s share of Spain’s gas supply reached a record high. In that month, Algeria supplied 53% of Spain’s natural gas needs, totaling 13.754 GWh—comprising 10.296 GWh of pipeline gas and 3.458 GWh of LNG. This performance reflects a sharp rise from September, when Algeria’s share was 37.5%. Notably, Algeria’s contributions outstripped those of Russia and the U.S., solidifying its position as Spain’s top gas supplier.
Comparing these figures to global competitors, Russia followed as the second-largest supplier to Spain, contributing 60.471 GWh, or 21.3% of the market share. The U.S. ranked third, with 50.689 GWh, equaling 17.8% of Spain’s gas imports. Nigeria and France also played smaller roles, with respective contributions of 19.162 GWh (6.7%) and 14.641 GWh (5.1%).
Spain’s total gas imports have shown substantial growth, reaching 284.333 GWh by the end of October 2024. This marks a significant increase compared to mid-2024, when imports stood at 177.671 GWh, reflecting the country’s growing reliance on international gas suppliers. Algeria’s continued dominance in this market underscores the strategic importance of its energy resources, not just for Spain but for Europe at large.
The upward trajectory of Algerian gas exports to Spain further underscores the country’s pivotal role in the global energy landscape. As European nations seek to diversify their energy sources, Algeria’s gas industry remains a cornerstone of Spain’s energy security strategy, marking a key moment in the strengthening of bilateral energy relations between the two nations.
This surge in Algerian gas exports is not only a win for the country’s energy sector but also for its geopolitical standing, particularly as global energy dynamics evolve in response to growing environmental concerns and shifting market demands.
