ALGIERS- In the wake of the 27th seminar held at the Basque Parliament, Spanish parliamentary groups have reiterated their unwavering support for the legitimate struggle of the Sahrawi people, emphasizing their inalienable right to self-determination and independence.
Following an intensive day of deliberations, participants issued a signed statement underscoring their steadfast commitment to defending the non-negotiable right of the Sahrawi people to self-determination. This principle, supported by United Nations resolutions, aligns seamlessly with international law.
The statement also expressed robust support for the Polisario Front as the legitimate and sole representative of the Sahrawi people, condemning the illegitimate occupation of Western Sahara.
In a call to action, the statement urged parliamentary initiatives to investigate ongoing human rights violations in the occupied territories. It emphasized active engagement within the United Nations and the European Union, advocating for an expanded mandate for MINURSO (United Nations Mission for the Referendum in Western Sahara) to monitor and ensure the respect of human rights in Western Sahara.
The participants highlighted the significance of agreements reached during the 47th session of the European Coordination of Support to the Sahrawi People (EUCOCO) in Toledo, Spain, held in December 2023.
The statement expressed solidarity with Sahrawi political prisoners facing unjust and oppressive sentences in Moroccan detention. It called for their immediate release and committed to supporting and accompanying their families in their relentless pursuit of justice and freedom.
Condemning the unlawful exploitation of natural resources in Western Sahara by the Moroccan occupiers, the participants urged companies to adhere to international law and negotiate exclusively with the legitimate representative of the Sahrawi people, the Popular Front for the Liberation of Saguia el-Hamra and Rio de Oro (Polisario Front).
In conclusion, the statement called on media outlets, universities, judicial bodies, and political and administrative entities to continue their efforts in the pursuit of justice and human rights in Western Sahara.
