ALGIERS – Speaking at the 8th Ambassadors’ Conference that brought together the diplomatic corps for a two-day event in Madrid, Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez referred to Algeria as a “friend” and a “strategic partner.”
According to the Spanish newspaper “El Periodico de Espana,” Sanchez, addressing the foreign policy priorities in front of 130 ambassadors, emphasized the importance of the relationship between Spain and Algeria, stating, “Algeria is a friendly country, and we will continue to work to maintain relations with this strategic partner.”
The preservation of Spain’s relations with Algeria is highlighted as one of the challenges in Spanish foreign policy, especially after the restoration of diplomatic relations between the two countries last November.
Sanchez’s declaration comes less than three months after the return of the Algerian ambassador to Madrid and the Spanish ambassador to Algiers in November, marking the beginning of the warming of relations between Algeria and Spain. These relations had undergone a period of tension lasting nearly two years following Sanchez’s reversal of Spain’s position on the Western Sahara issue.
In late December, the Algerian Foreign Minister, Ahmed Attaf, speaking on the Qatari channel Al Jazeera, confirmed that “things have returned to normal with the change in Spain’s position.”
“The green light to resume our relations with Spain came from the speech given by Pedro Sanchez to the United Nations General Assembly. There, he changed his position, and that’s all we asked for: for Spain to align with the position of Europe,” Attaf stated on Al Jazeera, assuring that “Spain’s position has made a 180-degree turn.”
It is worth noting that the two-year crisis between Algeria and Spain had repercussions on the Spanish economy, as asserted by operators in the country. The recent positive developments in diplomatic ties suggest a renewed era of cooperation and understanding between the two nations.
