Spanish Tourist Freed from Captivity Navaro Canada Joaquim Expresses Gratitude to President Tebboune

Algiers, Algeria | January 22nd, 2025 —  In a moving gesture of appreciation, Spanish national Navaro Canada Joaquim extended heartfelt thanks to Algerian President Abdelmadjid Tebboune and the country’s authorities for their unwavering commitment to his safety following his liberation from captivity.

Speaking during an official handover ceremony to the Spanish Ambassador to Algeria, Fernando Moran Calvo-Sotelo, Joaquim expressed profound gratitude. The event, held at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the National Community Abroad, and African Affairs, was presided over by the ministry’s Secretary General, Lounès Magramane. Joaquim praised Algeria’s swift and decisive actions, emphasizing his relief and sense of security. “I feel safe in your presence. These have been difficult times for me, but I am relieved after my release,” he stated.

Joaquim’s ordeal began on January 14, 2025, when he was abducted during a tourist visit near the Algeria-Mali border in the Sixth Military Region by an armed group comprising five individuals. The swift intervention of the Algerian People’s National Army (ANP) brought the harrowing episode to an end. Joaquim was located and freed by Algeria’s elite security forces, who ensured his well-being throughout the operation.

A statement from the Ministry of National Defense (MDN) highlighted the meticulous planning and precision that led to Joaquim’s safe return. Following his rescue, he was airlifted from Tin Zaouatine in the Sixth Military Region to the Boufarik Military Base in the First Military Region aboard a specially equipped aircraft, underscoring the mission’s high priority.

During the ceremony, Ambassador Calvo-Sotelo commended Algeria’s exemplary efforts, highlighting the country’s dedication to regional security and its steadfast partnership with Spain. “This outcome is a testament to the professionalism and humanity of Algeria’s leadership and security apparatus,” he remarked.

The operation further cements Algeria’s position as a regional pillar of stability, with President Tebboune’s administration demonstrating its resolute commitment to protecting human lives, irrespective of nationality. This mission’s success reflects the professionalism and vigilance of Algerian forces in countering cross-border threats and ensuring the safety of all individuals within its territory.
