Algiers, Algeria | September 29th, 2024 — The Speaker of the Council of the Nation, Mr. Salah Goudjil, welcomed the President of the National Assembly of Slovenia, Ms. Urška Klakočar Zupančič, on Sunday in Algiers. The meeting focused on enhancing interparliamentary relations and exploring new avenues for cooperation between the two nations.
According to a statement from the Council, both parties discussed the current state of parliamentary relations, emphasizing the importance of coordination through friendship groups and exchange of delegations. The two leaders praised the opening of embassies in their respective capitals, reflecting the deepening of ties based on mutual respect and friendship.
Ms. Zupančič expressed her country’s satisfaction with the high quality of cooperation with Algeria, calling for this positive momentum to be leveraged to further strengthen bilateral relations. She highlighted key sectors with potential for collaboration, including technology, artificial intelligence, tourism, education, and academia.
The meeting also touched on regional and international developments of shared concern. Mr. Goudjil reiterated Algeria’s commitment to non-alignment and condemned ongoing aggressions against the Palestinian people. He denounced violations of Lebanese sovereignty and criticized the hypocrisy of Western policies.
Mr. Goudjil reaffirmed Algeria’s longstanding support for a just resolution to the Palestinian cause, urging Slovenia to collaborate with Algeria at the United Nations, particularly within the Security Council, to advocate for a fair solution in line with UN charters and resolutions.
In response, Ms. Zupančič restated Slovenia’s clear stance on the Palestinian issue, calling for an immediate ceasefire and expressing support for a two-state solution as a pathway to peace.
Regarding Western Sahara, Mr. Goudjil reaffirmed Algeria’s firm position in favor of the Sahrawi people’s right to self-determination, a stance consistently advocated by President Abdelmadjid Tebboune. The Slovenian official echoed her country’s support for the UN-led process, emphasizing the importance of a peaceful, just, and lasting solution in accordance with international law.
This meeting marks a significant step in fostering deeper cooperation between Algeria and Slovenia, with both sides eager to expand their partnership across various sectors while upholding shared values on key geopolitical issues.
