Algeria, June 21, 2023 – US Assistant Secretary of State, Wendy R. Sherman, held talks with Algerian Foreign Minister Ahmed Attaf on Tuesday, in an effort to advance regional stability and strengthen the ties between the United States and Algeria. The meeting, announced on the official website of the US State Department, emphasized the shared commitment of both nations to enhance their bilateral relations.

During the discussions, Sherman and Attaf addressed a range of important topics, including the ongoing Russian-Ukrainian conflict. Both sides expressed their determination to achieve a just and lasting peace in accordance with the principles of the United Nations Charter. This reaffirmation of shared values and objectives demonstrates the commitment of the United States and Algeria to global peace and security.

Moreover, Assistant Secretary Sherman took the opportunity to congratulate Algeria on its recent election to the prestigious United Nations Security Council. The United States, as a long-standing partner of Algeria, expressed its delight in collaborating with the nation on the challenges faced by the Security Council. This recognition of Algeria’s role on the international stage highlights the country’s growing importance in regional and global affairs.

The positive developments in US-Algeria relations were further highlighted by a warm handshake between the US Ambassador in Algeria, Elizabeth Aubin, and President Abdelmadjid Tebboune at the opening of the Algiers International Fair. Ambassador Aubin expressed her pride in seeing American companies actively participating in Algeria’s thriving market. This gesture underscores the importance of economic cooperation and mutual investment between the two nations.

The remarks made by Assistant Secretary Sherman and the warm interaction between Ambassador Aubin and President Tebboune signify the deep respect and recognition Algeria receives on the international stage. These diplomatic gestures demonstrate the desire of the United States to forge a stronger relationship with Algeria, based on shared values and common goals.

As both nations continue to collaborate on various fronts, including regional stability, conflict resolution, and economic development, the strengthened US-Algerian partnership holds great promise for the future. Algeria’s increasing significance in global affairs and its commitment to peace and security position it as a key player in the international arena.

United States Reaffirms Support for United Nations’ Efforts in Western Sahara Conflict

Sherman reiterated the full support of the US State Department for Staffan de Mistura, the United Nations Secretary-General’s personal envoy. De Mistura has been intensifying his efforts to find a sustainable and dignified solution for the Western Sahara issue. The unwavering support from the United States further strengthens the commitment of the international community to resolving this longstanding dispute.

Earlier, the United States of America reiterated its strong support for the United Nations’ ongoing efforts to find a lasting solution to the Western Sahara conflict. In a statement, US Secretary of State Antony Blinken expressed the country’s commitment to supporting the UN’s Personal Envoy, Staffan de Mistura, as he leads consultations for a political resolution. This move is a significant blow to the Moroccan occupier and reinforces the US stance in favor of the Saharawi people’ self-determination, without endorsing Morocco’s autonomy plan.

By omitting any mention of the Moroccan autonomy plan, the United States has sent a clear message that it prioritizes a resolution that ensures the self-determination of the Saharawi people. This stance aligns with international law and the principles of the United Nations, which advocate for the right to self-determination of all peoples.

The United States’ position will likely encourage other countries to reevaluate their stance on the Western Sahara conflict. As more nations rally behind the UN’s efforts, the pressure on the Moroccan government to engage constructively in the negotiations will increase. A negotiated settlement that respects the rights of the Saharawi people will pave the way for stability and prosperity in the region.
