New York, September 20, 2023 – Algeria, poised to take on its role as a non-permanent member of the United Nations Security Council, has reaffirmed its unwavering commitment to global peace and justice. President Abdelmadjid Tebboune, in a speech delivered in New York, underscored Algeria’s awareness of the immense responsibility vested in it, expressing determination to leverage its extensive experience in mediation and the promotion of peaceful conflict resolution to address the challenges confronting the international community.

In his address during the 78th session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA), President Tebboune emphasized the need to foster the values and principles enshrined in the United Nations Charter. He stressed the importance of consolidating collective commitments and establishing robust foundations to strengthen global cooperation in addressing pressing global issues. The overarching goal, as articulated by the President, is to ensure international peace and security while advancing sustainable development in an increasingly multipolar world.

“The time has come to reflect on the means of promoting the values and principles of the United Nations Charter, consolidating our collective commitments and anchoring solid foundations, capable of strengthening global cooperation around major issues,” President Tebboune declared. He emphasized that these efforts are aimed at consecrating international peace and security, while simultaneously fostering sustainable development on a global scale.

Acknowledging the support of 184 countries that voted in favor of Algeria’s inclusion as a non-permanent member of the Security Council, President Tebboune expressed his gratitude and assured the international community that Algeria would live up to this trust during its mandate. He also pledged to work closely with all member states of the Security Council and within the United Nations to fulfill this responsibility.

Furthermore, Algeria intends to contribute its extensive experience in mediation and the peaceful resolution of conflicts to the Security Council. President Tebboune stated, “Algeria, moved by this spirit, will join the Security Council, bearer of hopes for African and Arab peoples,” and reaffirmed its commitment to pursuing definitive solutions to crises by addressing their root causes.

In a poignant historical reference, President Tebboune recalled Algeria’s advocacy for a new world order from the very same United Nations platform 50 years ago. Algeria sought to rectify the dysfunctions that characterize the current global order by championing an order based on equality between states, the very principles upon which the UN was founded.

As Algeria takes on its role as a non-permanent member of the Security Council, the international community can expect a steadfast commitment to promoting peace, justice, and equality among nations. President Tebboune’s address serves as a testament to Algeria’s determination to be a catalyst for positive change on the global stage, as it embarks on its mission within the Security Council.
